Chapter Three

Ronan turned onto the back road leading to a clearing at the edge of the forest, just as Josh had told him. He sent no map or text, only a brief call to confirm the day and place, and some directions.

Darkness mastered the night when he shut off the car.

Around him, he felt the mountains sighing, ancient giants shrouded in shadows, keeping the forest’s secrets.

He was about to become one.

A big, scaly, fire-spitting secret.

Free.

Chill, buddy, he scorned his dragon. This was unfamiliar territory. He had to keep his head clear in case things got sour.

After all, this might be a Purists’ ambush. A set-up by Josh made no sense, but the timing would be perfect. Taking out a bunch of Others, and the bonus of one of them being a champion of civil rights. A chuckle found its way out. The Purists hated him already, and they didn’t even know he was an Other. Destroying him so completely would make their day.

His breath caught when he heard another car coming his way, then park. He released it when Josh got out, his blond head a beacon in the dark.

“Hey,” Josh landed a weak punch on the shoulder as a way of greeting. “Can’t see my piss and it’s cold. Perfect night. I hate the heat, even worse when I shift. The fur, you know?”

Ronan had no comeback. It was all too mundane of a small talk for something this dangerous, and it still freaked him out. Big time.

Josh must have sensed his uneasiness because he stepped closer and said, “Dude, you need to relax.”

“What if someone sees us?”

“You can’t smell?”

“Yes, but–”

“Then you know there’s no one here. Trust your dragon. I can smell anything over two miles away, anyway. We’re good. Besides, there are animals in the forest.”

Ronan inched even closer to whisper, “I’m a damned dragon, man. There are no dragons in the forest, or anywhere else.”

Josh nodded. “Okay, you got me there, but we’re clear. Listen, you think we’re nuts, but we’re in no hurry of throwing our lives into the shitter. If we do this, it’s because it’s safe. Or safe enough to allow us to take the edge off from being constantly in a cage.”

Ronan understood Josh was right. He would have smelled people close by, he was acutely aware of how much any Other valued his or her safety in a world that refused to let them be. But he’d lived his entire life in a cage, as Josh had said, and this sudden freedom was terrifying. Like looking at the sun after years in a cave. He had left that cave, though. Maybe he could breathe. “All right, all right. It’s just that-”

“Don’t sweat, I get it. Let’s go.”

“Only us? I thought it was gonna be more.”

“There are more, but they come from the south side. We’ll meet them over by the pass.”

Josh started toward the woods, but Ronan didn’t follow. Shifting was as natural as breathing, but it came with some technicalities they were not discussing.
